Damages

The reduction, elimination, or suspension of a legal proceeding, charge, or financial obligation.

What is Damages?

Damages refer to the money a court orders one party to pay another as compensation for harm, loss, or injury. In civil cases, like personal injury, property damage, or contract disputes, damages are meant to make the injured party “whole” again.

Why It Matters?

They determine the financial value of a legal claim and directly impact settlement negotiations, trial strategy, and overall case exposure.

Example

A driver injured in a rear-end collision sues for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The total amount the court awards for these losses is considered damages.
