What is Defendant?

Identifying the defendant determines who bears potential liability, who must answer the claims, and who receives constitutional and procedural protections.
Example
In a car-accident lawsuit, the injured driver sues the at-fault motorist. That motorist becomes the defendant and must file an answer to contest the allegations.
